The South Downs Lemming Trail
100
miles and over 9,000 feet of climbing in just two days ... virtually all
off road ... pretty good going.
The South Downs Way is without doubt Britain's best long distance trail offering mile upon mile of uninterrupted off road cycling and hill after hill !
Leave the outskirts of Winchester early on a Saturday morning under the warm blues skies of late summer. Day one will see you take on a series of 600-700 foot climbs which will soon warm those weary legs. Although the trail is tough, the cycling is fantastic with superb views and fun descents.
80 Mile Route Option
Queen Elizabeth Country Park
If 100 miles over the South Downs Way sounds a little too daunting, then no
problem. Simply choose the 80 mile option which joins the main route at Q.E.
Country Park. Many cyclists opt to join the main pack here making the route
manageable but still a worthy challenge.
As the day progresses and begins to warm you'll be longing for drink, but don't worry, there are plenty of watering stations to keep you on track. On a trail of this difficulty, keeping well hydrated is the key to success. Make sure you're well watered for the final test of strength after a tough 60 mile day. A 700 foot climb stands between you and a welcoming overnight stop at Truleigh Hill barn. The overnight stop offers camping, along with a filling pasta meal and a gentle evening of socialising & relaxing, with everybody keen to share experiences of the days ups and downs!
Day two leaves you with an easier 40 mile run, but don't get blase as the hills are steeper and longer ! Of course, this means the descents are even better, so you can be sure of an excellent days mountain biking. If time is in hand then you will be able to look forward to the well established stop off at Alfriston where many cyclists gather in the village square to enjoy a thirst quenching drink in idyllic country surroundings. Don't linger for long though as there are still two tough hills to complete before you can enjoy the superb views of Beachy Head, Eastbourne.
