Fat Tyre Navigator

Autumn Series 2004: Round 2 - Sept 17, Ockley

Rick Fetherstone came within 10 points of clearing the course at this inaugural Navigator from Ockley and almost assured himself of the overall Autumn Series title in the process.

The Mosquito Bikes rider racked up a huge 690 points on his way to victory, comfortably outscoring his nearest rivals in the process. The strength in depth in the solo mens category was demonstrated by John Hill Venning and Daryl High who both broke the 600 point barrier to take second and third in a complex area to navigate, but the margin of Rick's victory suggested either local knowledge or some pretty thorough preparation. All he said as he finished though was "I've had a pretty good day out there..."

The same couldn't be said of another pre season favourite, Nick Calkin (Allparts Auto) who, along with many others, found the sheer trail density of the North Downs course tough to negotiate. It has to be said, if you can have a 'bad day at the office' and still bring in 570 points, you must be doing something right, but Nick was just pipped for victory in Single Vets by an in form Sid Hardy who came in with an impressive 580 point total. This makes Single Vets surely the most interesting category going into the Series Final at Kintbury. With Nick holding the slenderest of advantages over Sid, the winner at Kintbury is almost certain to take the title.

The Mixed Team category has got tougher in the last few months and Ockley saw a good contest between Nick Dean & Iwona Szmyd and Red Planet riders Annie Marson & John Platt. Nick & Iwona took the victory by 530 points to 510 to score their second category win of this season and make themselves near certainties to take the mixed title for the Autumn series if they ride at Kintbury.

In other categories, Gary Shipp & Paul Smith scored their second season victory in Mens Team, Bob Bending won the Super Vets category and Nicci Rondel & Nicky Allison edged top honours in the combined womens categories.

The Autumn series final at Kintbury is on November 14th and don't forget you need to ride all three events in a season to qualify for an overall placing. After the series final we will also be publishing the first ranking list which will take into account the best 5 results from the last 6 events. This list will be marked as provisional as it will include performances from the summer as well as this autumn seasons and will be updated each month through the winter season. The first official list will be published after the Winter series final, taking into account the 6 events (Autumn and Winter series) since the new ranking structure was announced.
