Autumn Series 2004: Final Standings
The Autumn series wrapped up with a good days riding on an excellent Kintbury course and the first snap of winter heralding the end of the season.
Rick Fetherston underlined his dominance of the Navigators with another overall win and set a benchmark with a total of 519 points scored out of a maximum possible 534. (For a full explanation of how the series scoring points are calculated, see the rules page).
That's not to say there were no challengers to Rick out there though. Nick Calkin rode well as usual to win Single Vets and place second overall while Nick Dean and Iwona Szmyd untouchable in Mixed Team completing the top three. Navigator newcomer David Pearson, improved throughout the season to claim an impressive second in Single Men and joint fifth overall, while John Hill-Venning sneaked into the top 10 overall in spite of competing in only two rounds.
Navigator regulars Graham Hildyard and bob bending enjoyed good series, Graham riding consistently well to take second in Single Vets and fourth overall, and Bob taking a comfortable win in Super Vets. Mens Team proved to be a patchy category with no one team competing in all three rounds. Paul Smith and Gary Shipp were comfortable victors from their two rides. Sarah Whiddett was the top performer in the womens categories.
The most competitive finish to the season came in Vets Team, where Nigel Collins and David Sawyer went into the final round with 14 point deficit to make up on leaders Chris Reed and Tim Underwood. they came agonisingly close recouping 13 of those points to finish just a point behind, but both teams had to settle for minor placings as Colin Steptoe and John Foster leapfrogged them to take the category in spite of missing the first round at Burbage! A full three race season would surely see them comfortably in the overall top 5.
