Spring Series 2005: Round 1 - March 13th, Wantage
Wantage at the end of winter would normally mean some of the heaviest ground to ride on that you'll find; but the trails this weekend were surprisingly dry and fast, leading to a good days riding and some good scores to start the new season.
We'll start this report with the ladies for a change, where the single women's category finally saw one of the contests we've been waiting for. Team Trail Breaks own Annie Marson, a perennial winner in this category in the past, returned from a stint in mixed pairs to test herself against the current top woman in the Navigators, Iwona Szmyd (Mosquito Bikes). In her own words, Annie 'went out on a mission' and rode herself to a hard earned 530 points and a comfortable victory. Iwona wasn't on her best form though and will be aiming for a better ride at Bramley - we're looking forward to some good competition between these two over the spring series.
The Mens categories saw Rick Featherstone (Mosquito Bikes) back on winning form with one of his most impressive rides to date. The fast trails certainly helped a lot of riders to accumulate good totals, but Rick's course clearance with 26 minutes to spare took us all by surprise. John Hill-Venning registered the only other clearance of the day to finish second overall in 3:17.
Single Vets was the most consistent category with the top 5 all breaking the 600 point mark. Alan Millard came out top with a good score of 670. In Super Vets, the overall Winter Series champ Nick Dean continued to confound the ageing process with another superb ride, turning in 680 points with plenty of time to spare.
Bill Pewsey and James Hunt took Vets Team and Nick O'Donnell and Joanne Denman put in a good winning performance in Mixed.
The Spring series hots up next month with round two visiting the North Downs in Bramley - a great new location for the Navigators that had a very successful 'trial run' in our Evans ride series last year.
