Winter Series 2004/05: Round 2 Jan 9th, Duncton
That's two rounds from three for the winter series and we've been let off lightly by the weather so far. The South Downs trails were heavy going but the rain held off until after the event, sparing the field from a really tough day out.
Rick Featherston (Mosquito Bikes) was a comfortable overall winner on the day, and after a long absence from the events, Jon Brooke seems to be getting back into the swing of things nicely placing second to him in the single mens.
Paul Smith returned from a couple of rounds off injured to resume his winning partnership with Gary Shipp in Mens team. Red Planets John Platt and Matt Kemp were second and it was good to see Rory Hitchens from Trail Break sponsors USE, partnering Phil Hodgkiss in third.
The Vets categories get tougher and tougher. Single Vets proved to be a one horse race no longer, as Sid Hardy took victory with Graham Hildyard a strong second. Mike Richman took third place on time. Just 10 points separated the top three in Vets Team, Graham Hughes and Steve Fairman got the points gap while Ian Petherbridge and John Pierce took second by the clock. Nick Dean came in with half an hour to spare to win the super Vets, but with Carl Baldwin and Bob Bending both riding well, maybe he can't afford to get too complacent!
The quality of competition in Mixed Team continues to rise too. Team Trail Break regulars Dean Stacey and Annie Marson took their second victory of the season by a slim 10 point margin from Joanne Denman and Nick O' Donnell. Sophie Trimming and Matthew Merrill came in third, a good score eroded by penalty points. In Single Womens, Catherine Pascoe (GA Cycles) and Iwona Szmyd (Mosquito Bikes) tied on points, with Catherine taking the win by a three and half minute time advantage. Judy and Elizabeth Bridge came out on top in Womens Team.
The winter series final is at Princes Risborough on February 13th. We'll have the series standings from the first two rounds on line shortly, but be sure there is going to plenty to ride for at the final!
