Winter Series 2004/05: Series Final Feb 13th, Princes Risborough
Anti-clock beats the clock!
One of the nice things about going over to the SportIdent system has been the detailed information it gives about everyone's route choices. Take this months detail for example. A short perusal over a cup of coffee shows that overall winner Nick Calkin (Allparts Automotive) scored victory with an anti-clockwise route choice, while almost everyone else took the clockwise option, lured in by a couple of high scoring but isolated checks to the north east. This was home turf for Nick, so local knowledge surely played a part, but it was a good route choice and a good ride in tough conditions.
And was it ever tough! This was the series final which meant an extra 10 points on each checkpoint, but faced with strong winds, low temperatures and thick mud, most riders struggled to match the scores they would make in a regular round.
Rick Featherstone (Mosquito Bikes) and Nick Dean won Single men and Super Vets respectively to finish 2nd and 3rd overall. The rest of the field were a long way behind the top three on the day. Mens Team was won by Duncan Askew & Steve Davidson, Helen & Geoff Reynolds took the Mixed & Iwona Szmyd (Mosquito bikes) finished top of the womens categories once again. It was good to see Bill Pewsey and James Hunt flying the flag for the Isle of Wight at the top of the Vets Team table. Can we expect great things of them for the Wight Diamond this year?
The Winter Series results and next months rankings will be out soon and while Rick Featherstone looks safe for another month on top of the rankings, the race for the overall top spot in the Winter series is almost too close to call! You'll have to wait for that result though...
