Fat Tyre Navigator

Woodcote, 11th March 2007

While the top scores of the day came in Single Vets as usual, we're going to start for a change with the Womens combined categories, which produced the most remarkable competition of the day, on a day that wasn't short of compelling contests.

Maddie Horton was first back in, setting the benchmark high at 570 points which would comfortably win the womens contest in most months. Not today though as Annie Marson flew into the finish shortly afterwards, posting a hefty 580 total to snatch a narrow lead. That looked like being the winner when Iwona Szmyd (Bikes@Hillcreast) went over time and started incurring penalties. Three minutes and 15 penalty points later though, she got in and posted a huge 640 total to record a final score of 625 points; the highest we've seen in the womens contest for come time and higher than the winning Mens Team score.

The Single Vets battle came down to Nick Calkin and Rick Fetherstone once more, who have traded wins quite evenly this season. Today it Nicks turn to come out on top, putting in a strong 675 point ride in spite of having missed training recently to illness. Rick was on form and on target until a puncture at the wrong end of the day cost him dearly in time penalties.

Single Men was the closest contest of the day, with the first three deadlocked on 660 points. Jay Horton won on time, but even that was close with only a couple of minutes separating first and third. Guy Exley and Peter Brown put in their best performance to date to win Vets Team, and Nick Dean headed up a large Super Vets field. Dean Stacey and John Platt tandemed up once again for a comfortable Mens Team win and Carl and Diane Baldwin took the Mixed Team category.

The final winner of the day was Bill Pewsey from the Isle of Wight, who missed out in the Vets Team competition but walked away with the fantastic series draw prize of a £999 road bike from Pinnacle Bikes. Congratulations Bill, enjoy your prize! And many thanks to Pinnacle Bikes for supporting the series and of course to Red Planet Bikes for their invaluable help and support.

There's more Navigator action coming up this summer, at the Wight Diamond Festival and at a one off South Downs summer Navigator on July 1st. Keep an eye out for a mid summer, midweek evening Navigator somewhere near Reading too; more details in the next few weeks.
