Fat Tyre Navigator
Kintbury, March 15th 2008
Kintbury is a suitably tough course for our winter season finale, a concept the weather got behind with gusto, bringing wind and rain that turned this into an epic! And while it beat the daylights out of many of the field, it brought out the best in a few to produce some remarkable results.
Top of the pile was James Hunt who had made his trip from the Isle of Wight worthwhile with a mighty 690 point haul in Single Vets. The Isle of Wight guys have been making the crossing to support the events every month and Jamie's results have been building all season, so it's good to see him finish the series with the best of the lot. Special mention goes to Mike Richman who scored second highest of the day overall, but still lost out in his category behing James.
Equally impressive was Iwona Szmyd's 600 point tally to win a depleted womens field and bag herself third overall in the process. An exceptional performance in really challenging conditions.
A win in Vets Team was some consolation for Nick Calkin and Kevin Holloway, who were hoping for a better result, but lost big penalties after Nick crashed out at speed on the wet road run back in. Luckily there was no serious injury done and he was able to get going again with the help of his team mate to pace him back.
In other categories, a strong ride from Stuart Norman was good enough to secure the always Super Vets, Nick Blake and Richard Smith took Mens Team. Mark Humphrey won a close contest in Single Men and Chris Porter & Abi Bromfield took another Mixed Team win, establishing themselves as a strong force in that category.
Many thanks to Red Planet Bikes for their invaluable help and prize contributions, to USE for supplying more prizes and to SIS for the energy drink. And thanks again to everyone competing throughout the series. That's another Winter Series wrapped up, but we're not farr off of the big Navigator of the year at the Big Wight Festival in May, and we've got a couple of mid summer evening events lined up too, before the Navigators return in October.
