The Ridgeway in winter means sticky mud up to your armpits, right? Well not this month it seems! An exceptionally dry Feruary gave us fast, hard trails on Sunday, resulting in an astonishing five course clearances, all of which deserve a name check here.
Fastest clearance of the day with an amazing 35 mihutes to spare, went to Nick Calkin and Rick Fetherston, who had put aside their usual rivalry to team up and tear apart both the course and the Vets Team category. I asked Nick afterwards if he'd enjoyed the event and he replied "Yes, but it was a bit short", almost earning himself penalty points for being a cheeky git in the process!
Nick Dean was only ten minutes behind on time in cleaning up to win Super Vets, with the Isle of Wight's Jamie Hunt six minutes behind to take Single Vets and third overall. Second place in Single Vets went to Ian Cartwright, who discovered the hard way that not even a course clearance can guarantee you a category win, while the fifth and final maximum went to Daniel Horton in Single Men, with 12 seconds to spare.
Mixed Team and Single Women were both closely fought, Chris Porter and Abi Bromfield taking a narrow victory in Mixed and Iwona Szmyd winning the womens contest on time. Ben Arnold and Andy Hay won in Mens Team.
Many thanks to Red Planet Bikes for their invaluable help and prize contributions, to USE for supplying more prizes and to SIS for the energy drink. And thanks again to everyonecompeting. Another healthy turnout and a great atmosphere continued a good year for the Navigators and we're looking forward to carrying that through to our final winter event at Kintbury next month.
