Fat Tyre Navigator

Shackleford, 13th January 2008

Shackleford is a tricky course at the best of times; the navigating the maze of tracks across the commons is no mean feat and in winter there's the elements to contend against too. So it doesn't help when an over officious forestry warden decides to take one of our checkpoints down, but that's what happened with CP 16. So we apologise to all of you who lost time looking for the box, you were at least awarded the points if you reported the problem. We're in the process of pursunig a complaint against the warden.

In competition news, Nick Calkin didn't let the missing box delay him and scored another impressive victory; in fact a course clearance with just 19 seconds to spare! Isle of Wight rider James Hunt made it a one-two for the Vets in the overall standings, just pipping Single Mens category winner Phil Slingsby on penalties. Carl Baldwin took the top slot in Super Vets with a score that would have troubled the absent Nick Dean and Johanna Wightman made up for a disappointingly small combined womens category by beating most of the guys hollow for a superb 6th place overall.

In Mixed Team, Red Planet Bikes' John and Freddie Platt were back in winning ways after a horse interrupted performance at Woodcote. Dave Brothers and Mark oxford took their first category win in Vets Team and the Kromhout brothers, Will & Rich, took a second win of the season in Mens Team.

Many thanks to Red Planet Bikes for their invaluable help and prize contributions, to USE for supplying more prizes and to SIS for the energy drink. And thanks to everyone for taking part in the competition. We had our biggest turnout for quite a while, which is great news for Navigators and a great way to start 2008. Keep supporting the events and we'll see you at Letcombe Regis next month.
