Fat Tyre Navigator
Shackleford, January 2009
Conditions were perfect for a high scoring contest on Sunday, as the bitter cold of the previous day relented and the long dry spell notched up another day. We weren't to be disappointed either, with four clearances forcing the Single Male and Vets categories to be decided on time.
First clearance home was Patrick Meldrum who set the benchmark for the day and took an early lead in Single Male and the overall listing. A great ride from Dan Horton claimed clearance number two in Single Male, but Patrick was four minutes too good and held on to the top spot for the day.
Then the course was blown apart by Rick Fetherston on top form, who not only topped out but broke the three hour barrier in the process. Not even a superhuman effort from Nick Calkin to clear in 3:15 could get close to that, so Rick took Single Vets and top honours over all for the day.
Behind these four, competiton was just as keen, with scores in the high 600s ticking in at a good rate. Alan Yule and Martin Rowark's 690 was good enough to clinch Mens Team and Nick Dean was the class of the Super Vets field once more, with a strong 680. Dave Brothers and Mark Oxford took Vets Team with 670 points and Iwona Szmyd was the only woman to top the 600 mark in taking the combined womens categories. Red Planet duo John and Freddie Platt wrapped up the honours list with the win in Mixed Team.
Many thanks to Red Planet Bikes for their invaluable help and prize contributions, to Cannondale & USE for supplying more prizes and to SIS for the energy drink. That's it for 2008. We'll see you in Woodcote in February for another round of Navigator action!
