Fat Tyre Navigator
Cranleigh, 6th December 2009
The new season continued at the weekend, with the new Navigator Dual format starting to find it's feet. The compulsory first stage was tweaked from eight checkpoints to just five, and this revised balance found favour with most riders, adding the spice and extra challenges to the event that Navigator Dual is designed to do, but without detracting from the pure navigation tradition that the event is built on.
The Cranleigh course was compact and hilly, sunny but exceptionally wet under wheel. The criss-cross of trails across the demanding Surrey Hills require either flawless route planning skills or exceptional strength and speed to conquer. Rick Fetherston relied on the latter to power around the course, taking route choices most would avoid, and notching up a 3:05 clearance for his reward. Nick Calkin recorded the only other clearance of the day in 3:17.
Ian Cartwright and Iwona Szmyd took Mixed team and third overall with a strong 870, and Julian Hemsted put in great ride to clinch Super Vets with 840 points.
Check the full results by category at the links below and take a look at the detailed overall listing too, to compare route choices; it makes interesting reading. You can still download the map too, if you want to see how those checkpoint sequences work out on the ground.
Our new format trial will continue at the January round in Shackleford on the 10th January. We still want to hear your feedback; there's a thread on our forum here.
